Meno Mouth Madness: Improving oral health during menopause and beyond!
By Cathryn Carboon, RDH, Master Health Promotion, TAE, FADH

Menopause is considered a taboo subject, with many women feeling ashamed or stigmatised and suffering in silence. Menopause is often overlooked in the discussion on oral and general health. There is limited awareness of the impact of menopause on oral health by patients and oral health professionals alike.
Menopause significantly impacts oral health, primarily due to declining estrogen, leading to an increased risk of oral health issues, including xerostomia, periodontal disease, hypersensitivity, caries, oral candidiasis and burning mouth syndrome.
Oral health professionals need to understand the impact of menopause on oral health and review specific oral health recommendations for women experiencing menopause, so they feel confident to engage with women during this life stage and provide tailored, preventive oral healthcare to improve women’s oral health related quality of life.
By attending this presentation, oral health professionals will gain confidence in discussing this topic with patients and navigating their own menopause journey. It’s time to break down the barriers surrounding this topic!
